In a hustle-filled world where the clock keeps ticking and bills need to be paid regardless of how you feel about it, it’s understandable you are wondering how to enjoy life now while having a store of cash for later. Especially when factors like a spender money personality, the allure of consumerism and instant gratification that leads to impulsive buying, and ongoing responsibilities e.g the black tax come into the mix. The age-old question arises: Can we truly experience fulfillment without compromising our financial well-being?
Yes we can! And this is great news indeed. Striking the right equilibrium between indulgence and financial prudence holds the key to a fulfilling and sustainable life. Of course, the more financially secure you are, the wider the range of enjoyable experiences you can cater to comfortably. Still, a lot is possible for the average upwardly mobile individual.
Listen, I don’t believe in a sufferhead life, extreme frugality and penny-pinching all the time only to live long and regret it. “I choose to live a rich full life” is one of my favourite affirmations for a reason. I believe it should be a conscious choice for you too. So before your walk on God’s green earth is done, be intentional about indulging in the things that are meaningful to you.
Ultimately, achieving balance is about making conscious decisions that align with your priorities. It requires introspection and self-awareness to discern between fleeting desires and lasting fulfillment. Here we will explore the art that helps us strike the right balance between enjoying life and saving and uncover the true essence of a meaningful existence. In pursuit of this delicate equilibrium however, know that finding balance is a personal journey. It may require experimentation, learning from mistakes, and adapting along the way.
Why is it important to save while you enjoy life?
Because you just never know. As Murphy’s law states, ”Anything that can go wrong will go wrong”. Life happens, and you will fare better with as big enough a financial cushion as you can muster. So before you become part of the 1% of the world (and even then), being conscious about saving money as you go on in life will serve you well.
Recognise that financial security and peace of mind contribute significantly to your overall enjoyment and happiness. Saving money allows us to weather unexpected storms, seize opportunities, and build the future we desire. But this does not mean that we have to sacrifice all enjoyment in the present. Therefore finding a sweet balance between enjoying life and saving money is an essential pursuit.
By discovering this equilibrium, we can break free from the notion that enjoyment and saving money are mutually exclusive. In fact, they can be harmoniously intertwined, each supporting the other. When we manage our finances prudently, we alleviate the burden of financial stress and create a solid foundation that allows us to truly savour the present. Let’s look at a few ways to help with the savings part.
Saving money challenge
You’ve probably heard about savings challenges at one point or another. Where people save a set amount of money, depending on the rules of the particular challenge. It might not be your cup of tea but committing to saving money challenges is a proven way people effectively pull off their savings goals. Here are a few commonly used ones you can look up.
- 30 days spending challenge
- The 6 month savings challenge
- Find extra money challenge
- The 30-day minimalism challenge
- 12 month savings challenge
- No new clothes challenge
- 30-day meal planning challenge
If you are not a consistent saver yet, consider these options and see how it works for you. Select one that is realistic, lines up with your goals, and you will be able to stick with. Heck, you could even create a new challenge by yourself!
I will add here that external accountability helps a lot to stay on course. Having a financial professional or like-minded community in your corner is an underrated success hack.

How to enjoy life
I’d begin by saying that how to enjoy life is different for everyone. And it means doing the things that really feed your soul and make your heart glad. Not a 3rd party. You!…. Whether that be binging on movies, volunteering, doing charity work, spending quality time with friends and family, having a solo retreat, experiencing a new adventure or something else.
For me personally, it translates to eating good food, embarking on new trips and adventures, going salsa dancing, spending time with the people who mean the most to me, and the like. And these are mostly things that I pay for. So what are those things for you? Even if you feel they sound weird?
Here are a few prompt questions to help you uncover what you truly enjoy, free from the interference of others.
1) What things bring a genuine smile to your face?
2) When you shut your eyes and imagine a really good life, what does that look like?
3) If you were to die tomorrow, what would you regret not having done?
These are the things that make you feel alive and make living worth it.
A few things to note;
Rome was not built in a day. Don’t leave the reigns to extreme hedonism and try to have all the fun at once! Just as binge eating isn’t good for you, plan for and spread these chosen experiences over time.
Also, it would be good that what you enjoy falls within the boundaries of legal and moral. Just saying.
How to enjoy life while saving money
Let’s explore these 6 strategies that would help us kill these 2 birds with a single stone.
1. Set Financial Goals that help you enjoy life
Setting clear financial goals is of utmost importance when it comes to finding a balance between enjoyment and saving money. Without specific objectives to work towards, it becomes challenging to stay focused and motivated on our financial journey. Clear goals provide us with a sense of purpose and direction, guiding our financial decisions and actions. They allow us prioritise our spending and make conscious choices that align with our long-term aspirations.
Having specific financial goals brings a myriad of benefits. Firstly, they help us stay disciplined and committed to our financial plans, preventing us from getting sidetracked by impulsive or unnecessary expenses. Additionally, they enable us to measure our progress and celebrate milestones along the way, fostering a sense of accomplishment and motivation. By breaking down larger goals into smaller, manageable steps, we create a sense of attainability, empowering us to stay on track and make consistent progress towards our desired financial future.
When it comes to setting financial goals, there are various avenues to consider. Building an emergency fund for instance is an essential objective, providing a safety net for unexpected expenses and helping us avoid falling into debt during challenging times. Saving for a vacation allows us to enjoy well-deserved leisure and create lasting memories without compromising our financial stability. Other common goals may include paying off debts, saving for a down payment on a house, or investing for retirement. By setting these goals, we lay the groundwork for a secure financial future while ensuring we can enjoy the present moments that matter most.
2. Create a Budget
Creating a budget is a vital tool for managing our finances effectively. It allows us to track our income and expenses, providing a comprehensive overview of where our money is being spent. By understanding our financial inflows and outflows, we gain clarity on our spending patterns and can make informed decisions to align our expenses with our goals and values. A budget acts as a guiding framework that keeps us accountable and empowers us to make conscious choices about our money.
It’s not about being caged by a rigid set of numbers that won’t allow us enjoy life. It rather helps us have a well-thought-out spending plan that works for our needs and wants. Following through on budgeting minimises the risk of overspending and accumulating debt, allowing us to build a solid financial foundation. By taking control of our finances through budgeting, we gain a sense of empowerment and confidence, knowing that we are actively working towards our financial aspirations while enjoying the present with a greater sense of financial security.
Tips for establishing a good budget include diligently tracking every expense, whether big or small, to ensure accurate record-keeping. Categorising spending into different categories, such as housing, transportation, groceries, and entertainment, helps us identify areas where we can potentially cut back, save more or optimise. Additionally, leveraging technology, such as budgeting apps or spreadsheets, can streamline the budgeting process and provide real-time insights into our financial health. Regularly reviewing and adjusting the budget as circumstances change ensures its effectiveness and relevance to our evolving financial needs.
3. Enjoy Life By Adopting Frugal Living Habits
Embracing frugal living habits can have a transformative impact on our financial well-being and overall quality of life. It involves making conscious choices to spend our money wisely and find creative ways to stretch our resources. By practicing mindful spending, we become more intentional about our purchases, carefully evaluating whether they align with our values and bring genuine value to our lives. The approach encourages us to prioritise necessities and experiences that truly enhance our well-being.
By adopting a frugal lifestyle, we often experience reduced stress and greater peace of mind. When we are not burdened by the weight of excessive debt or financial uncertainty, we gain a sense of freedom and control over our lives. Frugal living also encourages us to embrace simplicity and appreciate the things we already have. It shifts our focus from acquiring more possessions to finding contentment in what we possess and the experiences we cultivate.
Saving money on common expenses is a practical way to embrace frugality. Meal planning, for instance, allows us to make the most of our grocery budget by avoiding unnecessary food waste and costly takeout meals. Using coupons, taking advantage of sales, and buying in bulk are effective strategies to save money on everyday purchases.
In addition, exploring do-it-yourself projects where possible, thrift shopping, and borrowing or sharing items with friends and neighbours can significantly reduce expenses while still allowing us to enjoy the things we need and love. By adopting these frugal habits, we not only save money but also cultivate a resourceful and sustainable mindset that benefits both our financial well-being and the planet.
4. Prioritise Experiences over Material Possessions
In a society driven by consumerism, it can be hard to shift our focus away from material possessions. Though they may provide temporary pleasure, these items often lose their luster quickly, leaving us craving the next acquisition. Such is the insatiable nature of mankind. On the other hand, meaningful experiences are unique and personal, leaving a lasting impact on our lives. They enrich our understanding of the world, broaden our perspectives, and ignite a sense of wonder and awe that no material possession can replicate.
Good experiences have the remarkable ability to help us enjoy life much more than material goods. Studies have shown that the joy derived from experiences tends to be more enduring and meaningful. While material possessions may provide a good dopamine spike temporarily, this soon fades, and the happiness it elicits with it. Experiences, however, become ingrained in our memories, contributing to our sense of self and identity. They provide us with stories to share, moments to savour, and personal growth that extends far beyond the initial encounter. By prioritising experiences, we create a reservoir of happiness that can be revisited and cherished throughout our lives. I trust that you can attest to this in your own life too.
One of the beautiful aspects of prioritising experiences is that they need not be extravagant or expensive. There are numerous low-cost or free experiences that can bring immense joy and fulfilment. Exploring nature is a prime example. Whether it’s hiking in a nearby park, camping under the stars, or taking a leisurely stroll along the beach, immersing ourselves in the beauty of the natural world can be awe-inspiring, rejuvenating and a great wellness hack!
Engaging in volunteering activities is another way to experience the joy of giving back to the community while forming meaningful connections. From participating in local clean-up efforts to assisting at a charity event, these experiences provide a sense of purpose and fulfilment without breaking the bank. By valuing experiences over things, we embrace the richness and depth that life has to offer.
5. Find Affordable Ways to Pursue Hobbies and Interests
Pursuing hobbies and interests doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavour. By scouring the internet and good old belly-belly enquiries, you can land on cost-effective avenues to indulge in your passions without straining your budget. By being resourceful and creative, you will find enjoyable and fulfilling activities that align with your interests.
Reading, for instance, is a low-cost hobby that offers endless opportunities for learning and escapism. Many communities offer resources such as local libraries that provide free access to books, magazines, and online databases. Gardening allows individuals to connect with nature and cultivate their green thumbs without significant expenses. DIY projects, such as crafting or upcycling, provide an outlet for creativity while utilising affordable materials.
Seek out free resources and online tutorials to find affordable equipment or supplies that allows you to pursue your hobbies. Joining community groups or clubs centred around specific interests often opens doors to discounts, shared resources, and opportunities for collaboration. By tapping into these networks, you can uncover affordable options and connect with like-minded enthusiasts.
6. Cultivate a Mindset of Gratitude to truly enjoy life
Staying in a mindset of gratitude is vital to finding joy and contentment in life, period! In a world that often urges us to seek more, gratitude reminds us to pause and acknowledge the blessings already present in our lives. By shifting our focus from what we lack to appreciating what we already have, we can experience a profound transformation in our perspective.
Gratitude helps us recognise the abundance that exists in our lives and deepens our sense of happiness and fulfilment. It reduces the constant longing for more and helps us recognise and appreciate the intangible treasures, such as beloved relationships, health, and personal growth, so we can shift our priorities and find greater satisfaction in life’s simple pleasures.
Things like keeping a gratitude journal can be a simple yet powerful practice. Expressing gratitude to others, whether through verbal appreciation or handwritten notes, not only brings joy to the recipients but also enhances our own sense of gratitude. Find rituals or habits that resonate with you and incorporate them into your daily life to cultivate a sustained practice of gratitude.
